Men’s Volleyball Topped by No. 7 Southern Virginia in CVC Finale

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Drew University men's volleyball team played its final Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match on Friday and lost by a final of 3-0 at No. 7-ranked Southern Virginia University on Friday evening.

The Knights (27-4, 7-0 CVC) won by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-22.

The Rangers (13-15, 2-5 CVC) finish the conference season tied with Elizabethtown College for sixth place in the CVC standings. However, Elizabethtown won the head-to-head matchup between the two teams and will claim the sixth and final CVC postseason tournament spot.

Sophomore Matthew Adegbite led Drew with nine kills while classmate Gio Martin notched seven kills. Senior Jason Barbosa contributed six kills and seven digs, and sophomore Quinn Donahue handed out 27 assists. Sophomore Michael Shipman contributed five blocks.

Brady Dastrup led Southern Virginia with 14 kills.

The Rangers and Knights were tied 6-6 in the early going of the first set before the hosts used a 9-2 run to open up a seven-point lead, and they would hold at least a six-point advantage the rest of the way.

Drew kept it close for the majority of the second set and trailed just 18-16 after consecutive kills from Martin and Adegbite. Southern Virginia led just 20-18 before the Knights closed the set on a 5-2 surge.

The Rangers led for a significant portion of the final set, and they were on top 12-9 following a block from Donahue and Shipman. A kill from Barbosa put Drew up 16-13, but that's when the Knights rallied, ending the set on a 12-6 the rest of the way.

Drew closes out the season on Saturday, when it travels to Eastern Mennonite University for a tri-match. The Rangers take on Virginia Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. and Eastern Mennonite at 5 p.m.
