HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – In what has been a record-breaking season for the Drew University men's golf team, and the Rangers have topped themselves once again.
The squad shot a 293 (+5) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships on Wednesday in Florida, and with a 36-hole score of 590 (+18), the team made the cut to compete in the final two rounds of the tournament for the first time in program history.
Only the top 18 schools after the first 36 holes make the cut, and the Rangers are currently tied for 14th place among 43 teams. Drew, which jumped five spots in the team standings in the second round, will close out tournament play with one round in each of the next two days.
Illinois Wesleyan leads the way in the team standings with a 567 while Washington and Lee (570), Carnegie Mellon (571) round out the top-three.
Senior
Elliot Parker posted another outstanding performance for the Rangers, firing a 70 (-2) after opening with a 69 (-2). With a 36-hole score of 139 (-4), he is tied with two other golfers for fifth place in the field of 225. He is well within reach of the lead, trailing Ryan Dunn of Oglethorpe by just two strokes. In addition, he is just one stroke out of second place, which is currently shared by Adrian Jordan of Kenyon, Tim Kaufman of Washington and Lee, and Alan Van Asch of Lynchburg.
On Wednesday, Parker birdied his first three holes on his way to a 2-under 33 on the front-9. He closed the day by shooting even-par on every hole on the back-9.
Junior
Avery Cohen is second for the Rangers with a 149. After opening with a 77, he registered an even-par 72 in the second round, vaulting him 61 places in the standings to 74th place. Cohen started Wednesday with a bang, carding an eagle on the par-5 first hole, and he went on to par 12 holes while notching a pair of birdies on the back-9.
Sophomore
Sam Dolan and junior
Thomas Hurley have rounded out Drew's team scoring thus far and are tied for 103rd place with a 151. Dolan, who opened with a 76, shot a 75 on Wednesday while also carding a pair of birdies. He finished at even-par on 13 other holes.
Hurley shot a 76 on Wednesday after opening with a 75. Like Cohen and Dolan, he birdied two holes and shot even-par on 10 others.
Senior
Shiv Bhaskar is also in action and carded a 76 on Wednesday to move up 27 places to 164th with total score of 157 (81-76). He birdied three holes on the bšck-9, in which he shot an even-par 37.
Tee times for the third round will be posted on Thursday morning following the conclusion of Round Two, which is not officially complete since one pairing was unable to finish the final hole of the day due to darkness.
