MADISON, N.J. – Junior
Megan Fedish scored in the 46th minute and the Drew University women's soccer team played Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 1-1 tie in its season and home opener on Saturday in Ranger Stadium.
The game marked the debut for Ranger first-year Head Coach
Ray Goon.
Drew carried a 1-0 lead into the 85th minute, when Maddy Kaminski scored what held up as the game-tying goal for RPI.
The Rangers yielded just five shots on goal, though the Engineers finished with a 16-7 advantage in overall shots.
Senior
Sarah Crowley made four saves over 86 minutes of action for Drew. A pair of goalies split the time in net for RPI, as Ava Gaboury started and turned aside two shots before Hanna Pihu played the final 45 minutes without making a save.
The Engineers outshot the Rangers 6-4 in a scoreless first half, when Crowley made three of her saves and Gaboury stopped two shots.
Less than a minute into the second period, sophomore
Riley Bent sent in a cross from the right wing and had it deflected by a defender. Senior
Sophia Lara then redirected a pass to the back post, where Fedish one-timed it into the net for Drew's first goal of the season.
Crowley momentarily helped the Rangers maintain their lead with a big save in the 72nd minute, leaving her feet to deflect a well-struck ball before snatching it out of the air herself. However, RPI finally broke through in the 84th minute, when Kaminski headed in a cross that was deflected by a defender.
Junior
Hayden Scotti entered the contest at goalie late in the game for Drew and made a leaping stop on a dangerous RPI cross to help preserve the tie.
Drew plays the second of four straight home matches to start the season when it hosts Stockton University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
