Men's Soccer Scores Late, but Edged by Manhattanville

MADISON, N.J. – Manhattanville University scored the game's first two goals and the Valiants edged the Drew University men's soccer team 2-1 in a non-conference tilt Sunday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

Sophomore Matt Munoz scored the first goal of the season for the Rangers (0-1-1), striking in the 81st minute to pull Drew to within one. However, Manhattanville (1-0-2) would not yield another shot on frame the rest of the way.

Each side attempted 11 shots for the game. Senior Donovan Friedhoff made five saves for the Rangers while Dwayne Brown II stopped two shots for the Valiants.l

The visitors took an early lead with a goal in the fifth minute. Neither side scored over the remainder of the period and Manhattanville led 1-0 at the half.

Friedhoff made a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to keep it a one-goal game, but the Valiants broke through again in the 79th minute to go up 2-0.

Freshman Jayce Palumbo set up Drew's goal with a throw-in, sending a pass into the top of the box where Munoz fired a shot past the keeper and into the right side of the net. Munoz nearly tied it five minutes later but had a well-struck ball sail just right.

The Rangers play their third straight home match to open the season when they take on Stockton University on Wednesday in a non-conference tilt starting at 7:30 p.m.
