FDU Tops Rangers in Goalfest, 5-4

FDU 5, Drew 4

The sloppy conditions led to a sloppy game, but there was plenty of excitement as Drew lost a gripping 5-4 game to FDU in women's soccer action at Ranger Stadium on Tuesday night.  The Rangers led twice in the second half, after rallying twice in the first half, but saw the Devils score twice in four minutes to win the Battle Of Madison Avenue.  Christine Meconi scored twice for the Rangers, but Brittany Kanickij's pair for FDU included the game winner in the 81st minute.  Played in fog, mist, rain and showers on the turf at Drew, the game was not pretty, but both teams did the rivalry proud with their efforts.

FDU scored first, 22 minutes into the game.  Lora Fink got between a pair of Ranger defenders inside the 18-yard box and squeezed off a shot.  Drew's Kim Jaikissoon made the initial save on Fink's shot, but the rebound fell to Ashley Vieira at the six-yard box.  Vieira tucked it away for the 1-0 lead.

Kristen Blake equalized for the Rangers just three minutes later.  In a similar play to the Devil goal, Courtney Carnevale had the first shot saved by Melanie Pierson.  The rebound made it only as far as Blake.  The sophomore cleverly lofted her shot over Pierson, scrambling back to her line, and under the bar to tie it up at 1-1.

The second of the game for the Devils came through high scoring forward Brittany Kanickij.  From outside the 18, the junior scored her 20th goal of the season with a great chip of Jaikissoon in the 35th minute.  Kanickij picked up a loose ball in a pack of Ranger defenders before spotting Jaikissoon too far off her line.  Soon to be FDU's all-time leading scorer, Kanickij showed why with a well-weight chip.

Christine Meconi kept the goals rolling in with 5:30 left.  Off a long ball, Meconi's first touch got her a step past her defenders and alone with the keeper.  The sophomore rounded the keeper before slotting into the gaping mouth of the goal for her fifth tally of season and the 2-2 scoreline at the half.

Meconi opened the second half scoring as well.  Twenty minutes into the period, she gave Drew the lead.  Courtney Carnevale had the ball out wide with a number of options.  The first-year picked out Meconi outside the 18.  Her low, driven shot found the corner of the goal for a 3-2 lead.  The Brooklyn native moved to forward three games ago and has been unstoppable since.  With three goals against Juniata, one against Catholic and then two more tonight against FDU, she has found the back of the net six times in four games.

The Devils tied it up with 17 minutes left.  A very optimistic shot from Jenna Campfield off a failed clearance somehow skipped through the Ranger defenders and past Jaikissoon as FDU tied it up again.

Off a free kick from Chelsea LeDuc the Rangers took the lead again just three minutes after that FDU goal.  LeDuc's lofted cross caused panic in the Devil box. Pierson and Meconi got to the ball at the same time causing the FDU keeper into a fumble.  Kristen Blake was first to it and then pushed it wide to Megan Fogarty.  The senior's cross found an open Goodman in the middle.  Goodman's volley found the back of the net as Drew took the lead for the second time in the game.

The Rangers let in a soft equalizer just one minute later.  Off a corner kick, Fink's cross found its way through the entire Ranger defense before Kim Campfield turned it in from a few feet off the goal line.  The Rangers had led for just over 90 seconds before Campfield's goal.

Kanickij put the Devils up 5-4 with just under ten minutes remaining.  Another defensive miscue by the Rangers let Kanickij get in alone on the on-coming Jaikissoon.  The Devil's perfect chip found the back of the net once again for the game winner.

Drew came close to tying it up late in 88th minute, but Pierson came up with the save of the game to deny Kim Miranowic's free kick blast.

The loss knocked Drew down to 7-9-2 while FDU evened its record at 7-7-3.  While the offense, and Meconi in particular, seems to be humming along, the Rangers will need to address the defensive issues prior to Saturday's showdown with Susquehanna on Senior Day.  A win and some other fortunate results can clinch the Landmark's regular season title for the Rangers, but a loss could knock them out of contention.
