Drew 3-0 With Win Over St. E's

Drew 63, St. E's 48

Drew women's basketball completed the sweep of Madison Avenue by defeating the College of St. Elizabeth's, 63-48, in the opening round of the Ramapo Tip-Off Tournament.  The Rangers built an insurmountable 30 point lead early in the second half thanks to 62.5% shooting in the first period.  Danielle Barber led all scorers with 18 points and handed out nine assists while the Rangers got career-highs from Eden Blazovic and Rebecca Smith.  Drew improves to 3-0 on the season with wins over Madison/Convent Station rivals FDU and St. Elizabeth's.

A first half of torrid shooting helped Drew build the 16 point lead at the break.  Drew trailed by a point after four minutes of play when the Eagles' Sabrina Jarmolinski knocked down a jumper at the 16 minute mark, 9-8.  The Rangers then reeled off a 13-3 run to build an 11 point lead.  After Barber's jumper made it 10-9, Blazovic scored the Rangers' next three baskets for a 16-11 lead.  Consecutive jumpers by Barber made it 20-11 before the sophomore guard set up Olsen for the 11 point, 22-11, lead at 10:39.

Barber knocked down a jumper with just fewer than ten minutes remaining to counter Maesoon Deeb's free throws.  A three from Barber made it 27-13 before Jessica DelVecchio took over the scoring load for the Rangers.  The senior had already drilled a pair of threes when Kat Luby found her open with 7:24 left in the half.  JDV knocked down that triple and then followed up with a jumper a few minutes later to break a short drought by the Rangers as Drew built a 32-19 lead.

The final five minutes of the half were foul plagued as ten of the final 15 points were from the foul line.  The Rangers got the better end of that deal, 9-4, with Ashley Logan scoring her first points of the season after losing much of last year to injury.  Barber, DelVecchio and Blazovic were the biggest contributors in the first half.  Barber finished the period with 12 points, five boards and seven assists.  DelVecchio, one of the best shooters in the Landmark Conference, found her stroke while hitting 4-5 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc.  Blazovic had eight points in nine minutes.

Drew's lead grew to 30 points as the Rangers opened the second half with a 14-0 run.  Four points from Barber and Smith in the run helped give Drew a 53-25 advantage with 14:30 left in the game.  Smith's jumper with 12 minutes left made it a 31 point game, 60-29.

The Rangers didn't finish the game strong, just three points in the final 12 minutes, but by that time they had secured a spot in the tournament's Championship game tomorrow at 3 pm.  Drew awaits the winner of tonight's game between the host Roadrunners and

Barber had another outstanding game with 18 points, nine assists, five steals and five rebounds.  DelVecchio finished with 11 while Blazovic had 10 and Smith added eight points.
