Drew University defeated the College of Staten Island, 6-0, in women's soccer to open the 2009 season. The Rangers had six different goal scorers as they dominated the game. Along with Alyssa Goodman's opener in the 8th minute, four Rangers scored their first collegiate goals including Shamila Kohestani, a sophomore from Kabul, Afghanistan. Courtney Carnavale, Kristin Blake, Caitlin Dodge and Jenny Hicks added the Rangers' other goals.
The Rangers got on the board in the 15th minute as Alyssa Goodman opened her account for the 2009 season. Courtney Carnavale chased down a loose ball in the 18 before picking out Goodman alone with the keeper. Goodman slotted past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
The Rangers scored a nice second as Emily Tine's fine work set up Courtney Carnavale for her first collegiate goal. Tine's close control won her some time to find Carnavale 25 yards out; the first-year forward played it back to Tine charging through an opening in the Dolphin defense. More great dribbling from the sophomore preceded a delicate pass to Carnavale, awaiting the return in the box. Showing much more poise than one would expect from a collegiate debutant, Carnavale picked out the corner of the goal, ripping it through the net for the 2-0 lead in the 23 minute.
An surprising third saw Kristen Blake score her first collegiate goal. Surina Runawat played a ball back to Blake thirty yards out from goal in the 33rd minute. The sophomore saw an opportunity and lobbed the Dolphin keeper with her second touch. Though Lisa Radano did well to get a hand on the shot, it stayed just under the bar for the 3-0 lead.
Another of Drew's super sophs scored the fourth goal. Caitlin Dodge picked up a pass from Runawat just inside the half. Seeing some space, Dodge surged forward, survived a tackle and got ahead of all the defenders on goal. The last CSI defender clipped Dodge's heels as she moved to set up a right footed shot and the ref blew for a penalty. Coolly dispatch into the lower corner by Dodge, the PK gave Drew a 4-0 lead heading into the break. Despite the deficit Radano had a number of fine saves to take pride in as the Dolphin keeper made saves on a number of breakaways and clear chances during the half.
The second half saw much less scoring, but still saw the Rangers dominate possession and chances. It is a long, long way from Kabul, Afghanistan to Ranger Stadium, but when sophomore Shamila Kohestani picked up a loose ball inside the 18 yard box with just the keeper to beat, she looked right at home. Kohestani hammered her second touch into the top of the net for her first goal as a Ranger.
Massachusetts native Jenny Hicks didn't have nearly the same travel time to get to Drew as the previous goal scorer, but her terrific volley off Kim Miranowic's corner kick surely made North Brookfield proud.
Also of note, Isabella Bucchi, a 13-year old midfielder, sang another fantastic rendition of the National Anthem prior to the day's contest and upped her personal record to 2-0 as the Rangers' good luck charm.
