Men's Soccer Drops First of 2009

Manhattanville 1, Drew 0

Drew men's soccer suffered its first loss of the season as one goal from host Manhattanville sent the short-handed Rangers to a defeat.  Keston George scored on a free kick from 25 yards out after 58 minutes of play for the game's lone tally.  David Brigandi made three saves in goal for Drew (0-1-3).

Drew began the match shorthanded, missing a number of key players including striker Greg Zizik and three of its top six midfielders.  The lack of depth did not show immediately as the Rangers threatened first.  Vincent Costa fired wide early in the half before Marc Chiarello and Chris Gibaldi each drew saves out of the Valiants Jason Torres.  Late in the half, Brigandi made a key save on Erick Olazabal's shot to keep it scoreless. 

George ended the stalemate with a well taken free kick from 25 yards out in the 58th minute.  Curtis Fornarotto put a shot on goal later in the half, but Drew was unable to find the equalizer.

The game continues the Rangers' slow start on offense this season.  Drew has yet to score in 2009, but has also allowed just the solo goal.  The Green and Blue will look to make amends tomorrow evening as it takes on RPI at 5 pm in the second game of the Manhattanville Classic.
