Elzein Secures Big Win for Men's Soccer

Drew 1, E'Town 0

Drew men's soccer played its best game of the young season in knocking off previously undefeated Elizabethtown in Pennsylvania, 1-0.  Sharif Elzein scored the game winner in the 71st minute off Marc Chiarello's assist. Jeff Rogers made four key saves just before Elzein tallied the winner.  The Rangers (2-2-4) open up their Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday at Moravian following the big road win.

The match up between the Rangers and the Blue Jays is always one of the highlights of the season and tonight was no disappointment as Drew picked up the kind of win that can get a season rolling in the right direction.  The first half started slow with the first shot coming in the 30th minute of play when Pisani drew a save out of Eric Carr in the Blue Jay net.  In fact, Pisani and Kevin Walpole were the only players to record an attempt on goal in the half as physical play in the midfield dominated the action.

The game sprung to life in the second half.  Matthew Greenberg and Phillip Mabika had attempts before the Blue Jays made their biggest push for a win.  Ross Withrow's header was well saved by Rogers in the 56th minute.  Just three minutes later Michael Andrei tested Rogers, but the Drew junior was up to the task.  Next Rogers denied Brian Gallagher in the 66th before stopping Giovanni Correa's blast a minute later.  The good play from Rogers gave the Rangers a reprieve and the offense took advantage of it.

Off a free kick, Chiarello collected a loose ball to the right of the Blue Jay goal before picking out Elzein, who fired home the winner.  Elzein may not score many goals –this was his first of the year and the fourth of his career – but he makes them count.  All four of the senior's career goals have been game-winners.

Drew once-again dominant defense killed off the game, not allowing the Blue Jays a single shot over the final 23 minutes of play.  E'Town had been riding a seven game winning streak and the best start in school history before the Rangers handed the Blue Jays their first loss of the season.  Elizabethtown is one of the toughest/best places to play for a road team, so the Rangers rejuvenated themselves following the disappointing loss to Vassar on Sunday.

The Moravian Greyhounds await on Saturday as Drew looks to regain the Landmark Conference crown.
