One great play on offense and another stalwart performance from the Drew defense carried the men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Moravian in the Landmark Conference opener for both squads.
Greg Zizik scored just 12 seconds into the second half and the Ranger 'D' allowed just three shots all game, two of which were saved by
David Brigandi in goal. The Rangers improve to 3-2-4 on the season with seven shutouts. Moravian falls to 2-3-2.
David Brigandi came on as a substitute for starting keeper Jeff Rogers just nine minutes into the game and was immediately tested by the Greyhounds. The senior did well to deny Brian Hunscher and then Taylor Molinaro to preserve the scoreless tie as the Drew offense warmed up. Both Vincent Costa and Matthew Greenberg drew saves out of Tim Dollarton in goal for Moravian.
The second half started about as well as it could for the Rangers. Immediately following the kick, Greg Zizik, back on the field following an absence due to injury, carried the ball into the Greyhounds' half before firing from the 18 for the opening goal of the game and his first of the season.
Armed with a 1-0 lead, the Rangers, as they did against E'Town on Wednesday, shut down the Greyhound attack. Only a harmless attempt that sailed high in the 63rd minute registered in shots column in the second half. A night after the 2003 NCAA National Finalist team was honored as a Team of Distinct at the 2009 Hall of Fame dinner, the Rangers posted a win that would have seemed very familiar to that team. In '03, the Rangers set the NCAA all divisions record with 21 shutouts en route to the National Championship match. While the '09 version is well of that mark, a team Goals Against Average of 0.30 is still impressive.
Drew will look for its third straight win and third straight shutout when it hosts Goucher on Saturday the 2nd at 3:30.
