Rangers Cruise to 4-1 Win
Box Score
MADISON, N.J. (October 16, 2010) - Men's Soccer improved to 4-0 in the Landmark Conference this afternoon as they won their fourth straight against Landmark Conference opponent Juniata.
Drew was able to set the tone early with a goal from freshman
Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) just 3:13 seconds into the game. Senior
Matthew Greenberg (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) centered a pass to the streaking Gragnano for his team-leading 10th goal of the fall.
Greenberg would then go to steal the show offensively for the remainder of the game for Drew (11-1-2, 4-0 Landmark). He would tally the next two goals, one in the first half off a pass from
Ian Elfers (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) and another right out of the gate in the second half. His second half goal was not originally intended to go on net as he was crossing the ball to an open Gragnano but the cross was blocked by a Eagle defender and the deflection wound up the back of the net.
Juniata (8-6-1, 1-3-1 Landmark) has now put themselves in a dogfight for the final playoff spot as they currently sit fifth behind Catholic, the Rangers' opponent next Saturday.
The Rangers last goal of the afternoon may have been there most exciting. Freshman
Kevin Veliz (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield) and Greenberg were part of the three touch goal to put the game out of reach. Veliz and Greenberg would eventually hit Grangnano on a breakaway that was put past the charging Eagle keeper.
Senior
Jeff Rogers (Eldenburg, Md./Century) only faced two shots but picked up his 11th win of the year and 39th in a Ranger uniform.
The Rangers will play the first of their two conference games this week on Wednesday against Merchant Marine at 7:00. The game will be part Drew Soccer's Breast Cancer Awareness night. For more information on how to donate please visit
