Rangers Fall a Goal Short in Championship
Box Score
SCRANTON, Pa. (November 6, 2010) - Competing in the program's first ever Landmark Conference Championship game, the Rangers fell to top-seeded Scranton, 2-1 this afternoon.
The Royals, who earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, opened up a 2-0 lead 1:16 into the second half of paly. Scranton (15-4-1) got their two goals from First-Team All-Conference members Chelsea Paskman and Samantha Russo.
Trailing 2-0, the Rangers looked to catch a break in the 69th minute when they were fouled inside the box. They were awarded a penalty kick but Senior
Allison McCord (Southampton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) had her shot saved by the Landmark's Defensive Player of the Year, Caitlin Byrne.
Drew (12-7-1) was quick to squash the momentum of the save when just 58 seconds later when they netted their first goal of the afternoon. The Rangers were awarded two consecutive corner kicks and were successful on the second when
Liz Loiodice (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) lofted a ball that found the head of
Christine Meconi (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) for her seventh goal of the year.
The Rangers would get two more shots on net with under two minutes to go. Perhaps the best chance to knot the score came with 1:18 remaing when Loidice rocketed a ball that was turned away once again by Byrne.
Drew was one of two teams to get a goal past the Royal defense in the previous nine games. Scranton finished with a Landmark low, ten goals allowed.
Kim Jaikisson (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) made faced 23 shots on the afternoon and made a total of eight saves, her second highest total since the last time she faced Scranton in early October.
