MADISON, N.J. (March 17, 2010) - The Drew Rangers (0-6) fell to the Lightning of Lehman College (1-0), 5-3 today in their home opener on Doc Young Field.
Senior
Matt McGrath (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) had a stellar day at the plate going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman
Will Van Houten (Dexter, N.Y./Watertown) put together a solid performance on the mound allowing two runs over four innings of work.
The Rangers captured a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when McGrath supplied the first Ranger homerun of the season with a shot to right center. Van Houten was perfect through three innings before running into trouble in the top of the fourth. Lightning center fielder Jeremy Lopez ignited a two-out rally with a single and advanced to third on an Amadoernesto Guzman single. Both players were driven in by a single from Miguel Sanchez and a double from Matthew Arvelo respectively.
Coach Masco's squad would answer in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Tom Murray reached base after getting hit by a pitch. With two outs in the inning, the Lightning committed back-to-back errors that allowed Murray to tie the game.
With Van Houten out of the tie ball game, Lehman would take advantage and posted the go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth. The Lightning would string together three-straight hits, scoring two runs. Lehman would tack on one more insurance run in the seventh when Raul Cordero led the inning off with a triple and later scored on a Drew error.
The Rangers would have a comeback fall short in the bottom of the ninth when McGrath racked up his third hit of the day to lead off the frame. McGrath would later score Drew's final run on a ground out by David Kaplow (Westfield, N.J./Westfield).
Drew will open up conference play this weekend when they take square off against Catholic on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will feature two games slated for 1:00 and 3:00 with the final game of the three-game series set for Sunday at 1:00.
