Rangers Snap Eight-Game Losing Streak With Baruch Split

Junior Catcher Nicole Spiotta
MADISON, N.J. (April 15, 2010)-  The Drew University Rangers fell 3-1 to the Baruch College Bearcats in the first game Wednesday afternoon but came back to top the same Bearcats, 4-2 in the second.

Game One- The Rangers struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a bases loaded RBI single from sophomore outfielder Jackie Mannino (Little Silver, N.J./Redbank.)

The Bearcats came back in the fourth inning and scored two runs.  Designated Hitter Nicole Flint singled with two runners on to bring in the first run.  Right fielder Regina Cardinal worked a bases loaded walk to bring in the eventual game winner.

Baruch tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an Andrea Feeney single.  Feeney finished 2-4 with an RBI.  Andrea Tepfer tallied four strikeouts and picked up the win for the Bearcats improving her record to 9-3.

Junior right-hander  Adriana Durso (Old Tappan N.J./No.Valley Old Tappan) took the loss falling to 4-11 but did not go down quietly mowing down 10 Bearcats in the contest.

Game Two-
The Bearcats came out swinging and plated the game's first run in the top of first inning.  Tepfer, serving as the second game's designated player, cracked a RBI single up the middle to plate lead-off hitter Melissa Pena.

The Rangers battled back in the bottom of the third inning when junior first baseman Jillian Lusk (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains) demolished a 3-1 pitch over the left center field wall to tie game at three and notch her first homer of the season.

The Rangers earned the lead in the bottom of the fourth after junior second baseman Kati Eggert (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) lead off the frame with a single to left field and then stole second putting herself into scoring position for Mannino.  The sophomore delivered with her second RBI of the day up the middle and advanced to second on the throw in from center.  Mannino would eventually score on a fly-ball in no-man's land from pitcher Alyscia Zulauf (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) to put the Rangers up by two.

Baruch came back in the top of the fifth and loaded the bases with one out.  Zulauf got out of the jam by inducing a line drive to second that Eggert hauled to the bag to double up the runner and end the inning.

The Bearcats threatened again in the sixth with a first and third opportunity, one out.  Zulauf forced back-to-back ground balls to keep catcher Melanie Pellegrino, who lead off the inning with a walk, at third.  Lead-off batter Melissa Pena worked a two out walk to load the bases for RBI-machine Feeney.  Zuluaf forced a 3-2, two-out pop-up to the third baseman to end the inning and the threat.

Drew picked up insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Lusk drove a fly-ball deep enough to center to plate junior Nicole Spiotta (Morris Plains, N.J./Morristown) who lead the inning off with a single up the middle.

The Ranger defense shook off yet another advance in the top of the seventh from the Bearcats by smothering a second and third, one out opportunity with a pop up and a line drive.  Earlier in the frame Pellegrino sent a one out double to the left field fence to score one.  Flint took the loss on the mound for Baruch, her record fell to 2-5.

For the Rangers, Zulauf earned her first victory of the season and improved her record to 1-3.  Lusk finished with two RBIs and Mannino with one.  Spiotta had a 2-3 night with a run scored.

Next up for the Rangers is Susquehanna University who they take on this Saturday April 17th at 1:00pm in Selinsgrove, Pa.
