BETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 24, 2010)- The Drew Ranger baseball team dropped two heart breakers to the Moravian College Greyhounds Saturday afternoon at Gillespie Field. The almost-upset dropped the Rangers record to 8-27, 4-12 in the Landmark while the Greyhounds improved to 18-11, and secured second place in the conference at 9-4.
Game One
The Rangers put up two runs in the top of the third inning after junior
Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and senior
Matt McGrath (East Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) cracked back-to-back RBI-singles.
The Greyhounds put the ball in play when they needed to and tied things up in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catcher Austin Rock worked an RBI-ground out good for Moravian"s first run and second baseman Jake Schweitzer would later score on a sac-fly.
Rookie shortstop
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) collected his team-leading 47th hit of the season in the top of the fifth and would eventually score off the bat of Murray who notched his second RBI-base hit of the day.
The Rangers went into the sixth up 3-2 but Greyhounds got around on rookie
Will Van Houten (Dexter, N.Y./Watertown) and rallied for two runs off one hit and a Drew error to take the lead 4-3.
Moravian's Chris Morrison shut the Ranger bats down in the top of the seventh to earn his fifth victory of the season. Morrison tossed all seven, recorded five strikeouts and three walks along the way.
Van Houten struck out two in the loss, his record fell to 2-4 on the season.
Game Two
The Rangers and Greyhounds combined for just seven hits and three runs in the afternoon's second game. Moravian scored in the bottom of the first after lead-off man Jason Huber singled to get on, swiped second and was brought in by the three-hitter Dave Zubia.
Brendan Close tossed two innings of scoreless ball until the Rangers finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Close came out shaky and hit the first two batters of the inning, Bodden and Murray. He then settled in and induced a double-play ball but Bodden advanced to third. Senior catcher
Tom Sharp (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) came through and ripped an RBI-single through the right side to score Bodden and tie the game.
Senior
Tom Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) held off the Greyhounds until the bottom of the fifth when they would score the go-ahead run on a Huber sac-fly to center.
With the win Close improved to 3-0 on the season while Clark fell to 0-3.
Next up for the Rangers is the College of Staten Island Dolphins who they take on this Tuesday April 27th in the
Grace Hillery Breast Cancer Awareness Game at the CSI Baseball Complex. Game time is 7:00pm.
