#17 Kean Mounts Eighth Inning Rally to Down Rangers

UNION, N.J. (April 28, 2010) – Drew was on the verge of an upset as they lead for the first seven and a half innings before the Cougars of Kean University finally disrupted another quality performance by Will Van Houten (Dexter, N.Y./Watertown).

Kean (25-9) erased a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning by sending eight batters to the plate and got four runs off three hits. The Cougars wasted no time in the frame as the lead-off man Nick Nolan singled up the middle and came around just one pitch later when Dylan Laguna doubled to left center to make the score, 4-3. The Rangers opted to intentionally walk the next batter to setup the double play scenario but Kean countered and sacrificed both runners over to second and third. The sacrifice would prove to be key as the Cougars would tie the game on a wild pitch and move the go-ahead run to third. With Van Houten out of the game, Ken Gregory dug in with two outs and delivered the knockout blow with a single up the middle to score two runs, making the score, 6-4.

Behind Van Houten, Drew (8-31) was able to build and early lead. For the third-straight road game the Rangers scored in their first at bat. Tom Sharp (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) led off the game with a single to left field and was driven in a batter later by Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) when he doubled into the gap in left center.

The Rangers then tacked one run in the fourth and another in the fifth inning. In the fourth, Patrick Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) drove in his seventh run of the season when he delivered a two-out single to center that scored Louis Gialanella (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch). The Freshman, Bodden, found himself in the middle of the action again in the fifth as he took advantage of a lead-off walk. He was pushed to second on another walk by Cougar reliever Chris Judge. Bodden then stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make the core 3-1.

After the Cougars added a run in consecutive innings the Rangers came out in the top of the eighth to add what looked to be an insurance run. With two outs, Corey Napier (Chester, Conn./Valley Regional) reached on an error and then was doubled in by Sharp to make the score 4-2.

Sharp finished the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Behind him in the order, Rock and Bodden had a hit a piece and each drove in a run for the Rangers.

The Rangers will play there season finale against neighbors Farleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, May 4th at 3:30.
