Rangers Overmatched by Dolphins
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 27, 2010) – On cold, blustery night at the College of Staten Island Baseball Complex, the Dolphins explosive offense warmed up in the middle innings to pull out a 17-6 victory over the Rangers in non-conference action.
Drew (8-30) took an early 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat when
Matt McGrath (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) singled through the left side to score
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J/Monsignor Donovan). Dolphin starter, Jeff Pontebbi, settled in and held the Rangers scoreless over his next five innings of work.
Staten Island (27-9) played inspired baseball as they hosted their 7th Annual Grace Hillery Breast Cancer Awareness Night. The Dolphins scored 14 of their 17 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.
The Rangers did do their part prior to the game for the fundraiser as Coach Vinny Masco's squad generously donated their regularly allotted meal money to the cause. When the night was all said and done the event collected over $5,700 for the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative. Since the inception of the event in 2004 the Dolphins have raised over $30,000.
The Rangers did their scoring in the later innings against the Dolphin bullpen. They loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two outs.
Will Van Houten (Dexter, N.Y./Watertown) hit a ball to left field that was misplayed by Joe Cassano and allowed
Michael Bodden and
Aaron Melman (Newtown Square, Pa. /The Shipley School) to come around who both reached on walks earlier in the inning.
Drew was not done as they would put three more runs up in the ninth inning of RBI singles from
Michael Weiss (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and
Drew Obergfell (Cranford, N.J/Roselle Catholic).
The freshman trio of
Neil Cashes (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional), Bodden and Weiss accounted for five of the Rangers nine hits and scored four of the six Drew Runs.
The Rangers will close out their 2010 season in Union, N.J. tomorrow afternoon when they take on Kean at 3:30.
