Pioneers Slip Past Rangers
WAYNE, N.J. (April 6, 2010) – Drew could not capture a lead for the first time in eight games and fell to William Paterson (12-7-1) this afternoon, 8-6. Freshman
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) went 3-for-4 on the day including his team-leading second home run of the year.
The Rangers (2-17) surrendered the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a double and a pair of singles. It took six batters to finally get to Pioneer starter Bryce Warden who went unscathed in the first two innings.
Drew manufactured two runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at two.
Neil Cashes (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) walked and
Tom Sharp (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) singled to left field. The two-hitter
Chris DelMaestro moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt up the first base line. Cashes was then brought home on Bodden's sac fly and Sharp came in on one of
Matt McGrath's three doubles on the day.
The Rangers went to the bullpen early and got nearly six serviceable innings of long relief from freshman
Patrick Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day). With the score 4-2, Bodden stepped to the plate and with one swing got the Rangers within a run making the score 4-3. William Paterson wouldn't blink by mounting a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to open up their largest lead of the game at 6-3.
Drew would make the game exciting by scoring in the last two times at-bat but in the end would run out of chances. The Rangers got the first two runners on in the bottom of the eighth and both scored on an RBI groundout by
David Kaplow (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and a single by Sharp.
The Pioneers would put up one final two-run inning to close out the Rangers in the bottom of the eighth.
McGrath ended the day going 3-for-4 and raised his doubles total to 10 on the season, tops in the Landmark Conference. Sharp had his finest performance at the plate of the season picking up three hits and driving in one run.
Drew pitching could not keep Jack Montaille off the bases as he scored three of the eight Pioneer runs and racked up three hits on the day including a triple in the third inning.
Drew will return home tomorrow for the first time in four games when they play a make-up game against Centenary College on Doc Young field at 3:30.
