Rangers Win Second Straight, Defeat Bears
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (April 8, 2010) - Drew picked up another non-conference win this afternoon as they defeated the Bears of St. Joseph's, 11-1.
Matt McGrath (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) went 2-for-5 and drove in four runs for the Rangers and
Patrick Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) tossed six innings of scoreless relief to propel the Rangers.
Drew (4-18) never trailed as they crossed the plate first in the second inning off a pair of RBI singles from
David Kaplow (Westfield N.J./Westfield) and
Corey Napier (Chester Conn./Valley Regional) giving the Rangers an early 2-0 advantage.
The Bears only threat came in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored their only run of the game. After three-straight walks to load the bases, Keith Juricich singled in the lone run for the St. Joes (4-15). With the bases loaded and no outs, Coach Vinny Masco decided to go to the bullpen. He elected to go with the freshman Rock who came in and induced a fly ball and struck out the final two batters of the inning to get the Rangers out of a jam.
The momentum swing would do wonders for Rock and the Drew offense. Rock would go on to scatter two hits and issue only one walk while striking out four to earn his first win of his career. Rock retired 15 of the last 18 batters in six innings of work.
The Drew offense would pour it on in the eighth and ninth innings, piling up seven runs. The Rangers did all their damage with two outs. McGrath would pick up all four of his RBIs in the final two frames, raising his season total to 24.
Kaplow finished the day with a team-high three hits and had a trio of RBIs. The Rangers' two-through-six hitters went 8-for-16 with seven runs scored and seven RBIs.
The Rangers will return home and open up a three-game set with the Cardinals of Catholic University on Saturday. Game one of the Saturday doubleheader will start at 1:00.
