Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 12, 2011) – After being unable to determine a winner the past two meetings against Muhlenberg (7-3-1), the Rangers won in convincing fashion with a 3-0 victory at Ranger Stadium this evening. The Mules were tied for 21
st in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's latest poll.
Drew (11-3) jumped out to the lead early with two goals on two consecutive shots. The Rangers were awarded a penalty kick in the sixth minute which
Kevin Veliz (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield) served a beautiful ball to sophomore
Sam Nepveux (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) who headed the ball into the back of the net.
On the next Ranger shot five minutes later,
Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made use of his head, scoring off a pass from
Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial). The assist was Castro's team-leading fourth of the year and helped give the Rangers a quick, 2-0 lead.
The Ranger offense was not the only strong point for the Rangers as the defense was simply impermeable. Goalkeeper
Rich Boland (North Kingston, R.I./Moses Brown) made five saves and registered his conference-leading sixth shutout of the year.
Drew added their third goal of the night midway through the second half when Gragnano
was knocked down in the box. Head Coach
Lenny Armuth elected Veliz to take the ensuing penalty kick in which he converted to put the game out of reach. The free kick was the second of the season for Veliz as he upped his season point total to six on the year.
