Red-Hot Rangers Edge Hawks for Ninth Straight Win

Pezzuti recorded his first career assist in the win.

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (October 26, 2011) – Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) recorded his third, game-winning goal of the season in a 1-0 victory over SUNY-New Paltz (8-9-1) this afternoon. With the win, #16 Drew (15-2) has shut out 10 opponents and surrendered only seven goals this season.

The Rangers controlled the ball for the majority of the contest and unleashed 21 shots compared to 10 by SUNY-New Paltz. To open up the contest, the Rangers attempted the first nine shots of the game before the Hawks finally got one off in the 18th minute.

Freshman Michael Pezzuti (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) got the Rangers on the scoreboard when he sent a ball from the midfield to Gragnano, who beat the Hawk goalkeeper for his team-leading sixth goal of the fall. The assist by Pezzuti was the first of his Ranger career.

The Rangers defense, which came into the game ranked sixth in the nation in goals against average, held strong, squandering a handful of Hawk opportunities in the final minutes.

Freshman Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) got the start in the net and turned away four shots to register his second career shutout.

The Rangers will be on the road for their season finale when they square off against conference foe, Catholic at 1:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C. The winner of the game will capture the top seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs.
