MAHWAH, N.J. (October 5, 2011) – After 102 minutes of soccer,
Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the game's second overtime to give the Rangers a 1-0 win over Ramapo (6-3-2) earlier this afternoon. For Drew, it was their sixth shutout of the season as they improve to 9-2 on the year.
The Rangers were awarded a corner kick in the second overtime that was taken by
Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial). His service into the box was rattled around until it found the foot of
Tommy Tolve (Nutley, N.J./Nutley). The freshman then passed the ball over to Gragnano who slipped it past the Roadrunner goalkeeper.
The Rangers held a 22-11 advantage in shots throughout the game and scored on their only shot in the final period of play. The closest opportunity came in the first half of play when
Daniel Ratyniak (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) rung a shot off the post in the 40
th minute.
Junior
Rich Boland (North Kingston, R.I./Moses Brown) played the entire game in front of the net for the Rangers, making three saves in his fifth win of the fall. For Gragnano, the overtime goal was his third of the year and his third career game-winning goal.
The Rangers will return to the pitch this Sunday when they take on Goucher College at Ranger Stadium. The Landmark Conference bout will be the first game of a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
