Fords Pull Away in Second Half, Hand Rangers First Loss

WHEATON, Mass. (November 19, 2011) – In the first round of the Wheaton College Tip-off Tournament, Haverford (2-0) advanced to the championship game with a 60-54 win over Drew (1-1) this afternoon. The Rangers will play Lasell College in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Haverford's Rachel Baskin led a trio Fords in double digits with 14 points and six rebounds.Senior Danielle Barber (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) and Victoria Ault (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) each had 13 points to pace the Rangers.

The low-scoring first half began with the Rangers holding the lead for the first six minutes of the game. After two lead changes and a pair of ties, the Fords took the lead for good after a layup at the 9:19 mark. The Rangers remained close for the majority of the half and even tied the game up for the last time with 3:56 remaining in the half.

The Fords exploded out of the gate after the break holding a lead as high as 15 points. The Rangers would not go down without a fight, as they mounted a comeback that brought them within four points with two minutes to play. Down by nine points with 1:57 to play, Barber hit a layup and then a 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining to cut the lead to four.

On the next possession, Haverford missed two free throws, giving the Rangers a chance to get within a basket for the first time in the period. A missed 3-point attempt and a layup by Baskin with six seconds remaining sealed the Rangers fate.

Britta Olsen (Hallowell, Maine/Hall-Dale) came off the bench for the Rangers and scored 10 points including a 4-for-4 effort from the free-throw line.

The Rangers will play tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. before returning home on Tuesday to face Baptist Bible.
