UNION, N.J. (November 2, 2011) – The third-seeded Merchant Marine Mariners (10-6-1) upset the second seed Drew Rangers (15-3-1) this afternoon at Kean Alumni Stadium. The Mariners will move on to the Landmark Conference Championship game for the second-straight season.
The Mariners made the most of their opportunities in both halves and got revenge for a 1-0 loss in King's Point two weeks ago. In the first half the Mariners set the tone in the 17
th minute when Kyle Arestivo hit a ball up in the air that Casey Desiderio was able to one-time into the back of the net to give Merchant Marine the initial 1-0 lead.
The first half ended with the lone score by the Mariners despite a 10-4 advantage in shots by the Rangers after 45 minutes of play. The Mariners came out of the half looking to add to their lead but the Drew defense withstood a ton of Merchant Marine pressure over the first five minutes of play.
As the Mariner defense packed it in for the majority of the second half they managed to take advantage of a pressing Ranger offense in the 70
th minute as Ryan Silveira slipped past the defense on a breakaway and delivered cross to a slashing Cody Kessler who headed it into the goal.
Just 1:27 later a Mariner forward was pulled down in the box that resulted in a penalty kick. Kurt Olsen converted the free kick to make the score 3-0. The lead would be plenty for the defensive minded Mariners, who were led by Gary Poulin who made four saves for the win.
The Mariners defeated the Rangers for the second year in a row in the conference semifinals. Due to the damage and power outages at Drew the game was moved to the campus of Kean University.
