Barletta's RBI Single in Seventh Lifts Rangers
CAPE CORAL, Fla. (March 11, 2011) – The Rangers picked up their sixth victory of the 2011 season with a 2-1 win over Olivet College. Sophomore
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) singled home the winning run in the top of the seventh for the one-run victory.
Senior
Adriana Durso (Old Tappan, N.J./No. Valley Old Tappan) out-dueled Olivet's starting pitcher Breanne Harmon for her fifth victory in five days. Durso scattered four hits and struck out six for her 18th career victory. The two pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and only three runs allowed.
The Rangers would score first in the top of the fifth when
Jen Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) reached on a one-out single. She then stole second after the Rangers committed the second out of the inning. Freshman
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) then stepped in and poked a ball through the right side of the infield that brought home the speedy Mateo. Forsell was 3-for-4 in the game and is tied for the team-lead in hits with 11.
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) led off the seventh with a single up the middle to put the go-ahead runner aboard for the Rangers. Forsell then pushed her over to second with her third hit of the game setting the stage for Barletta. The sophomore shot a ball up the middle that would score Gagliano for the winning run.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Comets would put the tying and winning run aboard but to no avail. Forsell caught a hot shot at third base for the first out and Durso struck out her sixth batter of the game for the second. The third out would come virtue of a fly ball that was tracked down by
