Dolphins Sweep Rangers, Win Game One in 14

MADISON, N.J. (March 19, 2011) - After outlasting the Rangers 10-9 in 14 innings in game one, the College of Staten Island Dolphins completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two. The Rangers fall to 5-5 and drop their third-game in a row.

Game 1- Box Score

The Rangers had the game seemingly in control after opening up a 6-0 lead after three innings of play. The Rangers were the beneficiaries of a total of five Dolphin errors in the second and third innings. After scoring one run in the second inning on two errors, the Rangers would post five more in the top of the third off three errors.

Drew would get the first two batters aboard on back-to-back singles by Jen Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) and Kati Eggert (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls). Two Dolphin miscues combined with a Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro) bunt single would put the Rangers up 3-0 with no outs. Later in the inning Jackie Mannio (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) plated the final two runners on a RBI double to left field.

The Dolphins would begin to chip away at the six-run deficit in their next two at bats. An RBI double by Stephanie Solari in the bottom of the fourth cut the Ranger lead to four. In their next turn at bat the Dolphins exploded for three more runs courtesy of a bases clearing double by Joanna Tepedino to pull CSI within one.

Both the Dolphins and the Rangers would go down quietly in the sixth inning before game tying rally in the bottom of the seventh. CSI would get its lead-off hitter on and with two outs, senior Rachel Stroebel delivered a two-out single to left that scored the tying run.

It would take six more innings to decide the winner as each team was able to score one run in three of the five extra frames. In the seventh the Rangers were able to sacrifice a run on a Mannino fly ball to left field and score once more on a Eggert RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Both squads would exchange runs for the final time in the 11th inning to tie the game at nine.

In the bottom of the 13th the Dolphins placed runner moved to third on a Kaitlyn Flynn single. The placed runner, Diana Stout, scored during the next at bat when she crossed the plate on a Adriana Durso (Old Tappan, N.J./No. Valley Old Tappan) wild pitch. Durso suffered her first loss of the 2011 season and now sits at 6-1.

Game 2 - Box Score

In a role reversal, the Dolphins would grab the early lead in the second game of the afternoon after a five-run second inning. The Rangers walked in two runs and were victims of a Tepedino two-RBI double. CSI starting pitcher Michelle Ferraiualo kept the Ranger bats quiet for most of the game. She scattered four hits and one earned run over seven innings of work.

The Rangers would finally get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with two runs to cut the Dolphin lead to three. Mateo led off the inning with a bunt single and was followed by a Brooke Gagliano (Freehold Twp./Freehold Twp.) walk. Mateo would move to third on her third steal of the spring and would score on an over throw by the catcher when Gagliano attempted to steal second one batter later. Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) would bring in Gagliano with a sacrifice fly to the third baseman.

The Rangers brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh but grounded into a game-ending double play.

Drew will return home Wednesday when they take on cross-street rival St. Elizabeth's. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 on the Drew softball field.
