Cardinals Continue Dominance over Rangers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 20, 2011) - Catholic (10-5, 3-0 Landmark) completed its three-game sweep over Drew (5-8, 0-3 Landmark) with an 8-2 victory at Talbot Field this afternoon. The Cardinals remain undefeated against the Rangers winning all 12 games since entering the Landmark Conference prior to the 2008 season.

Catholic tallied all eight of its runs in the first four innings of play including seven against Drew starting pitcher Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day). Despite the seven runs, only two were charged to the sophomore right hander. In the four-run Cardinal third inning, Rock struck out two of the first three batters before an error prolonged the bottom half of the inning, allowing four runs.

In an 8-0 hole going into the fifth, the Rangers finally got on the scoreboard when Coury Napier (Chester, Conn./Valley Regional) singled home Kyle O'Neill (Basking Ridge, N.J./Gill St. Benard's) who led off the inning with a double to left. The rally was short lived as Cardinal starting pitcher Ryan Mowatt induced a ground ball back to the mound in which he turned into a 1-6-3 double play, ending the threat.

After Mowatt left, the Rangers would bring one more run across the plate in the top of the seventh inning. Steve DeBonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) collected his second hit of the afternoon with a double. O'Neill would reach base again with an RBI single that brought in pinch runner Neil Cashes (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional).

Mowatt went six innings for the win and was backed by a strong defense that turned three double plays in the game. Alex Taylor (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) and Dan Blum (Cambridge, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy) provided four innings of solid relief for the Rangers, giving up only one run and striking out four batters.

O'Neill finished the day 2-for-4 with an RBI while DeBonis and Napier also racked up two hits for the Rangers.

The Rangers will return home for two non-conference tilts this week against Arcadia on Tuesday and St. Joesph's on Wednesday.
