Greyhounds Complete Sweep in Late Innings
Box Score
MADISON, N.J. (April 25, 2011) – First-place Moravian (26-7, 14-1 Landmark) was held scoreless through the first six innings of play until they scored five in their final three frames to defeat Drew (10-23-1, 1-16-1 Landmark) for the third time in three days, 5-1.
Drew starting pitcher
Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) baffled Greyhound hitters through his first six innings of work, allowing only three hits. The sophomore worked 7.1 innings, allowing only one earned run and struck out five.
The Rangers scored first and held a 1-0 advantage after the third inning of play.
Neil Cashes (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and
Pat Lydon (Cumberland, R.I./Mount St. Charles Academy) led the inning off with back-to-back bunt singles. Both runners were moved up a base on a ground out and
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) delivered a one-out single to score the Cashes for the lone run of the afternoon.
The Greyhounds finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of two of the three Ranger errors on the day. Jon Baltz made the defense pay with a two-out RBI single to put the Greyhounds up 2-1.
The two runs would prove to be enough as Moravian rode starting pitcher, Tommy Fenyak, for eight innings. The right-hander scattered eight hits and struck out 10 batters to earn his third victory of the spring.
The Greyhounds posted one more run in the top of the eighth and two in the ninth to give a four run cushion to Fenyak and reliever Jason Jamula. RBI singles by Dave Zubia in the eighth and a pair of RBI hits by Mike Zubia and pinch hitter Rocco Del Priore paced the Moravian offense.
Kaplon had a season-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with the lone Ranger RBI while Cashes and Lydon had a pair of hits in the game.
The Rangers game on Wednesday against FDU had been cancelled and the Rangers will be back in action on Friday when they host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for the home finale. First pitch is set for 3:30 at Doc Young Field.
