Six-Run Second Lifts Rangers over Cyclones
Box Score
MADISON, N.J. (April 6, 2011) – The Rangers scored all seven of their runs in the first two innings of play in a 7-4 win over Centenary College (4-13) this afternoon. Freshman
Ken Myers (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on five hits for his first career win.
In what became a rain soaked Doc Young Field, Drew (7-14-1) was able to get to Centenary starter Kyle Bayse before a steady rainfall later in the contest. The Rangers capitalized off a lead-off error in the bottom of the first when
Steve DeBonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) reached on a booted ball by the short stop. After loading the bases, the junior scored the first of his two runs on the day when
Matt Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the home team up 1-0.
Centenary returned the favor in the top of the third, taking advantage of two Drew errors, scoring two runs on only one hit. Centenary's Garret Meagher delivered an RBI single to break up the 1-1 tie with two outs.
The proverbial floodgates opened up in the bottom half of the inning, as the Rangers pushed six runs across and took a commanding 7-2 lead. The Rangers forced Bayse out of the ball game after the inning after he surrendered six hits in the frame. Drew would get RBI singles from DeBonis ,
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and a two-out, two-RBI single from
Drew Obergfell (Cranford, N.J./Roselle Catholic) to cap the biggest rally of the season.
Myers pitched into the sixth inning allowing two more runs before giving way to
Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) who provided four innings of scoreless relief. Rock recorded his first career save and lowered his ERA to a team-best, 3.00.
Obergfell finished the game going 1-for-3 with three RBI while Bodden racked up a team-high two hits and an RBI in the win.
The Rangers will continue their Landmark Conference schedule this weekend when they travel to Susquehanna for a three game set. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 in Selinsgrove, Pa.
