Rangers Down Mariners in Crucial Landmark Game

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 17, 2012) – The Drew men's soccer team (9-4-2, 3-2 Landmark) avenged last year's playoff upset with a convincing, 3-0 win over Merchant Marine (7-7, 3-3 Landmark) this evening at Ranger Stadium.

Three different Rangers were able to tally goals and help Drew gain a game on the Mariners in the Landmark Conference standings. Drew was able to set the tone early with their quickest goal of the season, just 22 seconds into the contest. The Rangers drew a penalty inside the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Head Coach Lenny Armuth elected Tommy Tolve (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) to take the kick and he converted it for his fifth goal of the fall.

The first half closed the Rangers hanging on to a 1-0 lead and a 13-4 advantage in shots.

The two teams remained scoreless in the second half until the Rangers tacked on an insurance goal in the 80th minute.  Sophomore John Nogiewich (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) scored his third goal in the past two games when he headed a deflection off a corner kick into the back of the net.

Less than a minute later Drew put the game out of reach as Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial) had his shot saved but the rebound trickled right to the foot of freshman Jackson Hurst (Madison, N.J./Madison) who then tapped the ball in for the score. The goal was the first of Hurst's career.

Sophomore Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) pitched his sixth shutout of the season and made three saves to earn the victory.

The Rangers will be the second part of a doubleheader Saturday against Juniata. The men will follow the women and are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
