Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 24, 2012) – The Drew University men's soccer team improved its record to 11-4-2 this evening with a 5-0 win over Berkeley College (9-8) at Ranger Stadium. Junior
Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored two goals in the shutout victory.
The win is the Rangers' 11
th shutout of the season and eighth of the fall for goalkeeper
Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran). The sophomore made three saves and worked all 90 minutes in net for the Rangers.
It didn't take long for the Rangers to get on the scoreboard as sophomore
Michael Pezzuti (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) notched his second goal of the season in the fourth minute on header directly off a corner kick by
RJ Voorman (Wycoff, N.J./Ramapo). The Rangers made the score 2-0, six minutes later when freshman
Jackson Hurst (Madison, N.J./Madison) came up with a steal just inside the box and drilled home his second goal in as many games.
Gragnano capped off the Rangers scoring in the first half with his third goal of the season to give the Rangers a 3-0 advantage going into halftime. Drew held a 17-5 edge in shots and took all five of the game's corner kicks over the first 35 minutes.
The second half started just how the first half ended with a goal by Gragnano on a perfect cross from
Tyler DeTrude (Brentwood, Tenn./Immaculata). With the game in hand at the 68 minute mark, DeTrude ripped a ball well beyond the 18 that ended up just out of the reach of the Knight goalkeeper for his first career goal.
The Rangers totaled 29 shots compared to 11 by Berkeley and did not face a single corner from the Knight offense.
The Rangers will return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday when the welcome in Catholic for the regular season finale. With a playoff spot already clinched, the Rangers need a win to clinch the third seed. Drew will honor its seniors before the scheduled 3:30 start.
