Ranger Men Swim to Season-opening Victory

MADISON, N.J. (October 27, 2012) – The Drew University men's swim team (1-0) opened the 2012-13 season with a 108-78 win over King's College (0-1) this afternoon at F.M. Kirby Pool. Junior Austin Goetjen (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms School) won two individual events to lead the Rangers.

Goetjen took home first place in both the 50 Free and the 100 Free. In the 50 Free he came in with a time of 23.71 while teammate Matt Boudreau (Stockbridge, Mass./Monument Mountain Regional) touched second with a time of 24.62. Goetjen's winning time in the 100 was clocked at 52.45.

The Rangers kicked off the meet with a victory in the 200 Medley relay comprised of Michael Ng (Scarsdale, N.Y./Edgemont), Mark Berns (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn), Clayton Curran (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and Boudreau. The quartet came in with a time of 1:48.61.

Curran also won an event of his own in the 100 fly. He posted a time of 56.74 that was almost four seconds faster than any other swimmer in the race. Junior Thomas DiGuglielmo (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) won a pair of events, winning both the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breastroke. The sophomore turned in times of 2:05.05 and the 1:06.48 in the respective events.

The Ranger men capped off the meet by nearly topping the best 200 Free Relay time of 2011-12. Ng, Stan Chu (Livingston, N.J./Livingston), Goetjen and Boudreau placed first with a time of 138.80 which was less than a second slower than last year's time.

The Rangers will be back in the pool on Friday when they travel to Mount St. Mary for a tri-meet with the Mountaineers and York College (N.Y.). First race is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
