AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 12, 2012) – Despite seven errors in the field, the Rangers offense scored double-digit runs for the second-straight game to defeat Fitchburg State (0-4), 10-9 this morning at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. Sophomore Pat Lydon (Cumberland, R.I./Mount St. Charles Academy) hit a two-run single in the top of the eighth to put the Rangers ahead for good.

It was a seesaw battle between Drew (4-1) and Fitchburg from the beginning but it was the Rangers who were able to close out the game for their fourth victory of the year. Two-straight bunt singles and a passed ball put two runners in the top of the eighth, setting the stage for Lydon who delivered for the second game in a row in the late innings. Lydon finished the day going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and boasts a .375 batting average.

After the second comeback in as many games, junior Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) came on to earn his first save of the season, pitching two hitless innings.

The Falcons held the lead on two separate occasions in the first four innings. In the bottom of the third, Fitchburg took their first lead thanks to a Ranger error that allowed three runs to come in. The 3-2 lead was erased in the top of the fourth when Drew Obergfell (Cranford, N.J./Roselle Catholic) delivered an RBI single to knot the game at three.

Fitchburg came right back in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of another Rangers mishap, capturing a 5-4 lead.
Drew then blew the game open in the top of the fifth, racking up four hits and plating a season-high five runs in the frame. Obergfell once again had the big hit in the inning, roping a two-run double down the left field line. Sophomore Corey Mulligan (Pearl River, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) each had RBIs in the inning to give the Rangers an 8-4 advantage.

As they did all game, the Falcons would answer, posting five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-8 lead. Two more errors, combined with five hits, led to five more runs by Fitchburg.

Sophomore Alex Taylor (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) was credited with the no decision in his second start of the season. He went four innings and only allowed one earned run while striking out three.

Bodden reached base five times in the game and drew four walks. The four free passes are tied for the most in a game by a Ranger in 10 seasons.
The Rangers will take on Vassar College tomorrow at Chain of Lakes Park at 3:30. The game is a make-up of Sunday's rainout.
