MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 12, 2012) – The Rangers continued their Spring Training with another split today, despite two stellar pitching efforts from freshmen
Casey Reggiani (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) and
Amy Benedict (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township).
Drew couldn't overcome a one-hitter from University of Rio Grande pitcher Anna Smith, but made up for it with 11 runs in their second game to get the win over Bay Path College. After allowing only one run against Rio Grande, Reggiani showed her prowess at the plate in the second game with the first Ranger home run of the season
Game 1 –
The Rangers and Red Storm were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning, during which Rio Grande ace Smith recorded 12 strikeouts and no walks. But the Rangers stellar defense behind first-time starter Reggiani was enough to keep the Red Storm at bay.
Drew's only hit came from freshman third baseman
Kate McNamara (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) in the fifth inning, with a hard line drive towards the Red Storm shortstop. The Rangers were unable to capitalize but kept their composure and continued their strong defense behind the glove of second baseman
Lexie Forsell (West Windor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro), who recorded four put outs and three assists.
The Rangers got in to trouble in the bottom of the seventh when Kaitie Stewart hit a long double to center field and Jessi Robinson reached after taking a pitch off her toes. With two outs, third baseman Jaymie Rector singled down the right field line to bring in the winning run.
Game 2 –
After jumping out to an early lead and taking advantage of the three Wildcat errors in the first inning, the Rangers bats came to life in the bottom of the 3
rd to record six of their 11 runs in the five inning win.
Michelle Cozza (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) started the inning off with a triple that landed just in front of the fence in center field, her first of two hits in the inning. She beat out the Bay Path catcher after a passed ball to bring the score to 5-1. After Benedict was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice,
Grace Hurley (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) drew a walk to get the Rangers another run. With the bases loaded, Forsell hit a line-drive double down the left field line to bring in two runs. Hurley came around to third on Forsell's double and would make it home off of another passed ball. Forsell later scored off of an RBI ground out from
Jeramie Barletta (Madision, N.J./Madison). Regianni would lead off the next inning with a solo home run over the center field fence to bring the score to 11-1.
The offensive support was more than enough for Benedict, who recorded her second win in as many days, allowing just two hits and one run and recording seven strikeouts in five innings.
The Rangers will face Bay Path again tomorrow morning at 11:30 AM, and get a second shot at Keystone College at 1:30 PM.
