MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 13, 2012) – The Rangers continued their Spring Break action today with another two-game split. Drew opened the day with a 10-2 blowout over Bay Path College, but fell in a close contest to Keystone College, 4-3 later in the day.
Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) had an impact in both games, surrendering one hit in three innings of work in the circle against Bay Path, and hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Rangers within one run of Keystone.
Game 1 –
Drew made noise early when freshman
Antoinette Tovar (South El Monte, Calif./South El Monte) singled and stole second base to get in to scoring position for clean-up batter
Michelle Cozza (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) in the top of the first. Cozza hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Tovar to come all the way around for the Rangers' first run of the game..
Bay Path responded against starting pitcher
Grace Hurley (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of singles good enough to bat in one run, but D'Ornellas shut down the rally when she came to the circle with two outs in the inning.
The Rangers came alive in the top of the third to give D'Ornellas all the breathing room she needed. D'Ornellas helped her own cause with a hard single through the left side, followed by an infield hit by junior
Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City). Tovar then grounded out to move the runners, and Forsell drew a walk to bring Cozza to the plate with the bases loaded. The first baseman sent a line drive through the right side, and bringing all three runners home and advanced all the way to third on an error by the right fielder. Cozza reached third on the play, and would come around to score with the RBI groundout from shortstop
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison).
Bay Path would respond with one run in the bottom of the inning, but Drew increased the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of two passed balls and a single from catcher
Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township).
Game 2 –
After falling to Keystone 6-5 to open the season, the Rangers had hoped to split the matchup but were unable to complete the comeback late in the game. Drew got on the board first, once again led by the top of the lineup, when Mateo took advantage an overthrow by the Giant's pitcher to first to turn her grounder in to a position on second base. Forsell would come up third to blast a line drive through the left side and move Mateo in to scoring position. With Cozza at the plate, Forsell took off for second base and was called safe just as Mateo took off to steal home.
Pitcher
Casey Reggiani (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) started the game with a solid three innings of work, but got in to trouble when she allowed a single to start off the fourth inning. The Rangers were able to get the first out with a fielder's choice to catch pinch runner Jackie Murray at second base, but left Hannah Leizear on first. First baseman Kaitlyn Sawicki, who would go 2-for-2 on the day, sent a home run over the left field fence to put the Giants on top, 3-1. A double from Karissa Worobey and a RBI single from center fielder Chrissy Busichio completed the three-run inning for Keystone.
Reggiani settled back in, allowing no hits in the next two innings, but gave up a second home run to catcher Samantha Hartman in the top of the seventh to put the Rangers in a 4-1 hole.
With one out, Hutsebaut drew the walk and D'Ornellas hit her first home run of her career to bring the Rangers back within reach, at 4-3. Despite two more Drew hits in the inning the Rangers were unable to bring home the go-ahead run.
The Rangers complete their Myrtle Beach Spring Break trip tomorrow when the face the University of Rio Grande at 9:30 AM and Baptist Bible College at 1:30 PM.
