MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 14, 2012) – Drew Softball ended their Spring Break on a high note with a 4-1 come-from-behind win over Baptist Bible College (7-2). The top of the lineup orchestrated the seventh inning comeback, as
Antoinette Tovar (South El Monte, Calif./South El Monte) and
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Rangers fell to Rio Grande (7-3) earlier in the day, 6-0, and ended the week 4-4 overall.
Game 1 –
The Rangers faced Rio Grande ace Anna Smith for the second time this week. She allowed only one hit and struck out eight, but Drew battled back with three hits off of reliever Sydney Morris.
Drew pitcher
Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) went the distance in a losing effort. She ran in to trouble early with surrendering three-straight singles through the left side for the first run of the frame. Smith helped her own cause with a grounder to third base to bring the runner home.
Smith finished with three RBIs on the game with two coming in the second inning on a two-out single to right field with the bases loaded. Despite singles from each member of the middle of the lineup, Drew was never able to put together the rally, leaving a total of six runners on base.
Game 2 -
In the last game of Spring Break,
Casey Reggiani (Whippany, N.J/Whippany Park) started her third game of the week for Drew. The Defenders took an early lead when catcher Karin Mowry homered in Baptist Bible's second at bat of the game. Reggiani allowed two hits to the next two batters, but settled down and got out of the inning leaving two runners stranded.
Baptist Bible pitcher Kacee Rava held Drew scoreless for the next five innings, until Drew catcher
Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) dropped a single in to left center to start the rally.
With the bases loaded, the lead-off hitter Tovar, who already had two hits on the day, got the sacrifice fly to bring pinch runner
Grace Hurley (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) home for the tying run. With two outs, Forsell hit a line drive at the third baseman to bring Reggiani home with the go-ahead run. Shortstop
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) gave Reggiani breathing room with her only hit and RBI of the day.
The three runs were more than enough for Reggiani, who struck out two in the bottom of the inning to complete the 3-1 win. She ended the day with no walks and seven strike outs.
The Scranton Royals will visit Drew for the Rangers home opener and first Landmark Conference game of the season this Sunday at 1:00 P.M.
