PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March 20, 2012) – Arcadia (6-10) blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with eight runs and defeated the Rangers, 12-5 at Erny Field this afternoon. With the loss, Drew drops to 6-5 on the year and open up Landmark Conference play this weekend against Catholic.
Arcadia grabbed the initial lead in the contest in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single from Kyle Jackson that scored Mark Bowman who reached on a hit earlier in the inning. Jackson was 2-for-4 on the day with his only RBI coming on the game's opening run. In their next turn at bat, the Knights tacked on another run, this time on an RBI hit from Jay Zehring to give his team a 2-0 advantage.
The Rangers responded in the top of the fifth when sophomore
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) singled was issued a one-out walk. He advanced all the way to third on a stolen base and passed ball. He later scored on a
Steven DeBonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) RBI groundout. Drew tied the game up in their next at bat when
Matthew Hunter (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) came across on a passed ball.
Things would unravel for the visiting Rangers in the bottom of the sixth as eight runners crossed the plate after the Knights sent 12 batters to the plate. Seven hits, capped by a Jerry Smith RBI triple and a David Jacobs RBI single sealed the fate of the Rangers.
Ranger starting pitcher
Leo Ruiz (Perth Amboy, N.J./Saint Joseph) pitched five innings and was charged with four earned runs. Drew relievers
Cody Cummings (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) and
Francis Rossi (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) didn't fare much better allowing a combined seven earned runs.
Bodden finished the day going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Hunter and sophomore
Pat Lydon (Cumberland, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) each had multiple hit games in the Rangers loss.
The Knights used eight different pitchers to hold the Rangers to nine hits and five runs.
Drew will return home for a weekend series against Catholic to open up Landmark Conference play. The doubleheader Saturday will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Doc Young Field.
