MADISON, N.J. (March 23, 2012) – Catholic (12-6, 1-3 Landmark) scored the first 11 runs in game one of a three-game series, handing Drew (6-6, 0-1 Landmark) a 13-5 loss on Doc Young Field this afternoon. The two teams will conclude the conference series with a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.

Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the top of the second inning when the Cardinals used a pair of triples by Matt Grieb and Brendan Breslin to push the first three runners across. They added to the lead in their next inning after advancing a runner to third and taking advantage two-out balk by starting pitcher Ken Myers (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) to make the score 4-0.

The top of the fourth is where the game unraveled for Myers and the Rangers. Catholic sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on seven hits. Six of the first 11 runs for Myers were earned as the Rangers committed two of their three errors in the big inning by the Cardinals.

The 11-run cushion was more than Catholic needed as starter Andrew Carroll went six strong innings, allowing three runs on three hits.

The Rangers plated their first two runs of the game thanks to back-to-back walks by Steven DeBonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) and Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial). With one out, Pete Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) singled up the middle to score Debonis. Murray would come around later in the inning on a fielder's choice to make the score 11-2.

With the score 13-3, Murray brought home the final two runs of the ball game on one swing of the bat in the bottom of the eighth. The senior blasted his first homer of the spring and third of his career to make the score 13-5.

The Cardinals racked up 19 hits on the day, the second most allowed by the Ranger pitching staff this season.

The two teams hope to dodge the bad weather forecasted for tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 a.m.
