MADISON, N.J. (March 29, 2012) – The Rangers posted seven runs in their first turn at the plate and never looked back in a 10-4 win over New Jersey City University (8-9) this afternoon at Doc Young field. The Rangers have scored 33 runs in two days and improve to 9-7 on the year.
Seniors
Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), P
ete Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and
Drew Obergfell (Cranford, N.J./Roselle Catholic) each had two hits to lead the Rangers offense. Murray finished the day going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two hit by pitches.
A pair of Gothic Knight errors allowed the Rangers to blow the game wide open in the bottom of the first. With one out and two runs already across thanks to an Obergfell RBI infield single, freshman
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) came to the plate with two outs and smoked a triple into the left center field gap allowing all three runners to score and giving the Rangers a 5-0 lead. Drew tacked on two more runs in the frame, one courtesy of a
Dominic Reyes (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) single to center field that scored Kowalski.
After giving up a run to the Gothic Knights in their first at bat, Ranger starting pitcher
Leo Ruiz (Perth Amboy, N.J./Saint Joseph-Metuchen) settled in working five and two thirds innings to earn his first career victory. Reliever
Cody Cummings (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) pitched the Rangers out of a base loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth to limit the Knights to only one run in the inning. Cummings bridged the game to closer
Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) by tossing two innings of scoreless baseball.
The Knights 4-5-6 hitters, Mike Martucci, Rob Roman and Andrew Rivera, combined for six to the 12 NJCU hits.
The Rangers will continue their Landmark Conference schedule this weekend when they travel to King's Point, N.Y. for a three-game set with Merchant Marine. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start followed by a nine-inning game Sunday at noon.
