MADISON, N.J. (April 10, 2012) – In a rematch of last week's 14-10 Ranger win, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (12-14) racked up 27 hits in a 23-5 win over Drew (13-12) this afternoon on Doc Young Field. Bear pitcher Donny Pagano pitched a complete game, striking out five batters to earn the victory.
After posting four runs in their first turn at the plate, the Bears came back in the top of the second and plated seven more runs to open up an 11-1 lead. The Ranger pitching staff proved to be ineffective early surrendering 14 earned runs and 12 hits in the first two and two thirds innings.
The only bright spot for the Rangers came in the bottom of the first inning when Ranger designated hitter
Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) smacked his second home run of the season over the right field wall. The long ball was the fourth of his career.
The Rangers brought home two more runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI ground out by freshman
Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) and an RBI double by
Drew Obergfell (Cranford, N.J./Roselle Catholic) that scored
Pete Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood). The Rangers put only one more run on the scoreboard thanks to an outstanding performance by Pagano.
Lead-off man Thomas McKenna went 5-for-7, scoring three runs and driving home four runners in the win. All but one batter in the Bear lineup put together a multiple hit performance. Chris Cutrone was one of three players with three RBIs as he finished the day 4-for-5.
The Rangers will stay in New Jersey but travel to Hoboken tomorrow night to take on Stevens. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
