HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 11, 2012) – The Rangers evened their record earlier this evening with a 4-3 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology (17-10) at Dobbelaar Field. Drew drops its second game in as many days and falls to 13-13 on the season.
Stevens jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to three runs in their first two turns at the plate. The Ducks struck first with a sacrifice fly by Dan Allen in the bottom of the first that scored Tom Phillips. The Rangers answered in the top of the second on an RBI single by
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park), scoring
Pete Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood).
Stevens took the lead for good, thanks to Phillps, who cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple to left field. Duck starting pitcher, Kevin Matthews, settled in and did not allow another run over the next four innings of work. The junior scattered four hits over six and a third innings of work to earn the victory.
Ranger starting pitcher
Francis Rossi (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) went six solid innings and had only one more miscue in the in the bottom of the fifth, allowing a one-out home run to Dan Allen. Rossi allowed four runs over six innings.
The Rangers mounted a comeback with Matthews out of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Junior
Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and
Steven Debonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) reached base and moved into scoring position on a groundout by
Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial). With two outs, Tuchol came to the plate and singled down the left field scoring two runners, making the score, 4-3.
Stevens reliever, Tyler Courter came on to pitch the ninth and earned the save, retiring the Rangers in order.
Tuchol finished the day going 3-for-4 with two RBIs raising his season average to .337 on the year.
The Rangers will return home this weekend for a three-game series against Susquehanna beginning on Saturday. Thursday's non-conference game against Baruch has been postponed until further notice.
