Rangers Come From Behind to Sweep Crusaders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
MADISON, N.J. (April 14, 2012) – In both games of today's Landmark Conference doubleheader, Drew (15-13, 6-5 Landmark) came back to defeat Susquehanna (13-17, 2-9 Landmark) in a pair of one-run ball games on Doc Young Field. The Rangers took game one of the series, 5-4 and went on to win the nightcap, 7-6 to complete the twinbill sweep.

Game 1
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, pinch hitter Michael Chiarella (Harrison, N.J./Harrison) singled to right field that scored the tying run and also brought around the go-ahead run, Michael Bodden (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), on an error by the right fielder.

The Rangers did most of their offensive damage in their final two turns at the plate. Drew cut a three-run deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) and a two-out error by Susquehanna pitcher Brian Wendig. Kowalski went 3-for-3 in game one with an RBI.

On the mound for the Rangers was freshman Matthew Hunter (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who pitched a complete game to earn his first career victory. Hunter gave up only three earned runs in the outing and struck out four batters.

Game 2
The Rangers jumped out to what seemed to be a comfortable, 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of the second game.  Chiarella came up with two runners on and doubled down the left field line scoring Drew Oberfell (Cranford, N.J./Roselle Catholic) and Kowalski. Chiarella finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Rangers tacked on two more runs on a bunt base hit by Dominic Reyes (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) and bases loaded walk drawn by Pete Tuchol (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood).

Susquehanna instilled a comeback of their own, scoring the games next six runs and took a 6-4 lead going into the final three innings. The Crusader offensive spurt was highlighted by a three-run double by Dan Wing and solo home run by Ty Raubenstine.

Trailing by two runs again in the late innings, the Rangers put together a three-run sixth inning to capture a one-run lead.  With two outs in the inning, the Rangers strung together three RBI singles by Steven DeBonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham), Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Kowalski to take a 7-6 lead in their last turn at the plate.

The Rangers looked to relief pitcher Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) for his fourth inning of work, his longest outing of the season, to close out the Ranger victory. After hitting the first batter, Alex Miskovsky, the Crusaders sacrificed him to second to put the tying run in scoring position with one out. Back-to-back singles by the Crusaders nearly loaded the bases but a heads up play the Drew third baseman, Tuchol, caught Mike Rucereto leaning off third for the second out. Rock then induced a ground ball to second for the game ender and his team-leading fourth win of the year.

The Rangers will look for the series sweep tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. on Doc Young Field.
