Softball to Host 1st Annual "StrikeOut Cancer" Game

MADISON, N.J. (April 2, 2012) - The Drew University softball team will host its first annual StrikeOut Cancer Day on April 3, 2012 when the Rangers host Stevens Institute in a non-conference matchup.  The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m. and game two is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start time.

Through the StrikeOut Cancer initiative, the American Cancer Society and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) combine forces in an effort to raise both funds and awareness to fight cancer.  During this partnership that began more than ten years ago, the NFCA has been able to raise thousands of dollars to support the fight against cancer.
To show support for the cause, the Drew Rangers will don pink jerseys for the game.  Additionally, the day will start off with a ceremonial first pitch thrown by a local woman currently battling breast cancer and cancer facts will be read between innings in place of the standard music.  Donations to the cause will be accepted throughout the doubleheader.

The Rangers hope their fans will join in the excitement and help StrikeOut Cancer.   There will be t-shirts and concessions available for sale during the doubleheader.  The Madison Softball League, an organization close to the hearts of the players and coaches, is already showing overwhelming support.  The Drew players instruct a four-week winter clinic for the Madison Softball League, helping to instill a love of the game in girls ages six through 16.  The first 20 girls who play in the Madison Softball League headed by Rob Welter to attend the game will receive a free StrikeOut Cancer t-shirt!  Additionally, there will be a framed, autographed 8x10 photograph of Victor Cruz of the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants up for raffle.  The photograph captures one of Cruz's early touchdown receptions during October 2011 (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) vs. the Seattle Seahawks.  Raffle tickets will be available for $5 each.

Come out to the softball field on the Drew University campus on April 3, 2012 and see some great softball while supporting a great cause.  If you can't make the game but you would still like to support the Drew Rangers please contact Interim Head Coach Charlotte Labate at clabate@drew.edu or 973-408-3017 or send a check payable to Drew University to:  Drew University-Softball Office, 36 Madison Avenue, Madison, NJ 07940.
