Late Charge Leads Rangers to Game One Victory

Myers had a career day, striking out 11 batters in 8.1 innings.

MADISON, N.J. (April 20, 2012) – The Rangers scored three runs in their final two at bats, coming from behind for a 3-2 win over Scranton (16-14, 6-7 Landmark) today on Doc Young Field. Sophomore Ken Myers (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) struck out 11 batters, allowing only three hits and one earned for his third victory of the year.

The Royals scored their only two runs of the game in the top of the third inning on a single by Tim LeCompte that scored Matt Rayha. On the same play freshman Michael Umerich came all the way home thanks to an error by Dominic Reyes (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) in center field.

Myers closed the door on the Royal offense allowing only two more hits over the next five innings of work. Reyes redeemed himself at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning getting the Rangers on the scoreboard with an RBI single to right field that scored Michael Chiarella (Harrison, N.J./Harrison).

In the bottom of the eighth inning Steve Kowalski (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) came up with his third hit of the day with one out to put the tying run on first. The next batter, Drew Obergfell (Cranford, N.J./Roselle Catholic) delivered his first career triple down into the right center field gap that scored Kowalski and tied the game at two.

Freshman Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) came on to pinch run and scored on a two-out error at second base off the bat of Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) to give the Rangers the lead.

Myers complete game bid ended with one out in the ninth thanks to a double by Eric Pizzico. The Rangers elected to go to junior closer Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) who retired the next two batters to earn his third save of the season. Rock currently leads the Landmark Conference with 1.46 ERA and four saves.
