MADISON, N.J. (April 21, 2012) – For the first time since entering the Landmark, the Rangers captured their third conference series in a row thanks to a 3-1, come from behind victory in game two to defeat Scranton (17-15, 7-8 Landmark) this afternoon. Drew is now 17-14 on the season and 9-6 in Landmark Conference play.
Game 1
The late game heroics did not appear in the first game of the twinbill as Scranton emerged with a 5-3 victory. The Royals broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth inning, plating two runners of Drew starting pitcher
Matthew Hunter (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).
A pair of singles by Tim Lecompte and Mark Grambo gave the Royals a two run cushion for starting pitcher Rocky Sawyer with allowed only four hits and two earned runs in a complete game victory.
Senior
Tom Murray (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) went 1-for-3 in game one and brought home two runners on an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning. Classmate
Steven DeBonis (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) scored two runs and went 2-for-3 with a walk in the contest.
Game 2
The Royals posted the first lead of the ball game in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Edward Ravert that scored Mark Grambo. The senior, Grambo, reached earlier in the inning on a double down the left field line.
The Drew offense got to work in their final two at bats of the day. In the bottom of the fifth, freshman
Michael Chiarella (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) led off the inning with a single down the right field line and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by
Matthew Kaplon (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park). The nine hitter,
Dominic Reyes (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) stepped in and tied the game up with an RBI single through the right side.
One batter later, the Rangers took their first lead of the day with a RBI double to left by DeBonis that scored Reyes from second. DeBonis finished the day going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Rangers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Kaplon that scored
Al Krause (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus).
Drew starting pitcher
Alex Taylor (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) did not allow an earned run on the day, working five and two thirds innings. He ran into trouble in the sixth allowing two straight singles to put runners on the corners with two outs.
The Rangers went to the bullpen and called on closer
Pat Rock (Cranston, R.I./Providence Country Day) who induced a ground ball to end the inning. Rock worked a perfect seventh to earn his conference-leading fifth save of the season.
The Rangers will control their own destiny next weekend in their final series of the year against Moravian. Two Drew wins or Scranton loss will clinch the first conference playoff berth since 2006. The Rangers will travel to the College of Staten Island on Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
