MADISON, N.J. (April 3, 2012) – A masterful pitching performance by freshman
Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) in game one led to a 2-0 victory over Stevens (7-11) this afternoon in a non-conference twinbill. The Ducks bats came alive in game two, earning a split with an 8-1 win over Drew (7-11) in the nightcap.
The doubleheader marked Drew's First Annual “StrikeOut Cancer” Game. The softball team sold t-shirts and raffled off an autographed picture of Victor Cruz to raise money for cancer. Prior to the game the Rangers had Mary Castro, a friend of the program battling cancer, throw out the first pitch.
Game 1
D'Ornellas kept the Duck offense in check recording her second-straight shutout. She scattered four hits over seven innings of work to improve to 4-3 on the season. She has now thrown 12-straight innings without surrendering a run.
The Rangers offense finally got their starting pitcher the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back RBI singles from
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro) and
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison) with one out gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead.
The lead held as D'Ornellas sat down all three batters in order in the top half of the seventh inning.
Game 2
Stevens racked up 15 hits on the Rangers pitching staff in the second game of the afternoon, pushing across eight runs. The Ducks scored in every inning but the fifth and held the Ranger offense to just four hits in the contest to earn the win. Drew managed only one run, leaving eight runners on base in the game.
Stevens pitcher Brianna Sandone kept the Ranger bats quiet allowing only one run over six innings. Five Ducks turned in multiple hit performances in the second game of the day. Stephanie Senkevich went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Stevens attack.
The Rangers will return to Landmark Conference action with a doubleheader at home against Catholic on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
