MADISON, N.J. (April 7, 2012) – Catholic (15-11, 4-2 Landmark) ended a six-game losing streak with a two-game sweep of Drew (7-13, 2-6 Landmark) this afternoon. The Rangers went down, 3-2 in a game one pitcher's duel to start the day. In game two the Rangers surrendered a season-high 15 hits en route to a 14-3 victory.
Game 1
Catholic jumped out in front early with two runs in the first inning. Both RBIs came off of a two-out double from Erin McMakin.
The Rangers staged a comeback in the fourth inning off the bat of
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, N.J./Madison), who had her team-leading fourth double and eleventh RBI of the year on the play.
Kate McNamara (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) brought in the tying run with a single up the middle.
It didn't take long for Catholic to regain the lead, as they scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Mel Galella and were able to hang on for the series-opening win.
Game 2
It was déjà vu in the second game, when the Cardinals scored three runs in the first. The Catholic runs were fueled off of three hits against Rangers pitcher
Casey Reggiani (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), all of which were doubles.
This time Drew was unable to keep pace as the Catholic offense exploded for eight runs in the second. The Cardinals were once again led by McMakin, who went 2-for-2 in the game with four of the team's 14 RBIs. Seven members of the Cardinals line-up had RBIs in the inning.
Drew's three-run rally came in the third inning when the top of the line-up was able to string together three hits and three
stolen bases. Sophomore
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) bunted home
Michelle Cozza (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) who reached on double earlier in the inning. The two then successfully completed a double steal of second and home to post the second Drew run of the game.
Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) capped the Rangers scoring with an RBI double to center field.
The Rangers return to the diamond this Tuesday in a non-conference matchup at home against King's College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
