Men’s Soccer Holds on for Season-opening Victory

Walpole assisted on the Rangers first goal of the night.
Box Score MADISON, N.J. (August 31, 2012) – The opening night of the 29th Annual Drew University Fall Fest saw the Rangers come out with a 2-1 victory over The College of New Jersey (0-1) at Ranger Stadium. An unassisted, second-half goal by Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) proved to be the game-winner in the 49th minute.

Just before the first half ended, Drew (1-0) broke a scoreless tie on a beautiful combination between Kevin Walpole (Newark, Del./Sanford School) and Michael Jacques (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North). Walpole took possession of the ball just outside the box and slipped a pass to Jacques who beat the Lion keeper for the game's first goal.

Drew wasted little time registering their second goal of the evening, when Gragnano cleaned up a rebound in the box just four minutes into the second frame. Junior goalkeeper Rich Boland (North Kingstown, R.I./Moses Brown) made three saves in the first half and totaled five on the night to earn his first victory of the year.

The Lions threatened late in the second half scoring on a long shot attempt in the 81st minute off the foot of Kevin Shaw. The Rangers defense held tight, allowing only two shots on goal the entire second half.

The Rangers will be seeking their 17th Fall Fest Championship tomorrow when they take on Arcadia at 5:00 p.m.

Earlier in the day Arcadia blanked Western Connecticut, 3-0 and will play for a shot at their first Fall Fest title in two, all-time appearances. The Knights used two second half goals to pull away from the Colonials including a successful penalty kick by Nick Morris. Dean Search and Alex Wells also tallied goals in the contest.

Western Connecticut will play TCNJ at 3:00 p.m. in the third place game at Ranger Stadium.
