Mariners Clip Rangers in Overtime

Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y. – (October 23, 2013) – The Merchant Marine Mariners (5-5-1, 2-1 Landmark) escaped with a 1-0 win in overtime to defeat the Drew University men's soccer team (9-4-3, 1-2-2) this evening. Dan Weldon scored the game-winner 6:31 into the first overtime session to lift the Mariners.

The Rangers defense finally broke in the 97th minute as Weldon came up with a loose ball in the penalty box to seal up a mid-week Landmark Conference win for the Mariners. The game was the first for Merchant Marine in nearly a month as the recent government shutdown prevented the academy from participating in any athletic contests.

Drew had been knocking at the door the entire contest, owning a 17-8 shot advantage in the game. The Ranger defense was just as stellar, allowing only three shots on goal in nearly 97 minutes of play. Merchant Marine senior goalkeeper Gary Poulin made a game-high 13 saves in the contest, earning his fourth shutout of the season.

The Rangers did not allow a single shot in the first half of play and held a 13-1 edge in shots in the 90 minutes of regulation. Junior goalkeeper Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) was credited with two saves in the defensive juggernaut.

The Merchant Marine and Drew series has been a back and forth battle over the past three years. They have traded victories since 2010, with the Mariners now winning three of the last five. Drew still holds the all-time series, 15-10-4.

Saturday will be senior day as the Rangers welcome in the University of Scranton in another Landmark Conference tilt. The men will be the second game of a doubleheader, with game time scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
