WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (October 26, 2013) – In a meet that came down to the final relay, the Drew women's swim team (0-1) fell to King's (1-1), 106-97 in today's season opener. The Drew men were defeated 120-65 in their first action of the 2013-14 season.
The King's women clinched the victory on the meet's final event, the 200 freestyle relay in which they out-touched the Rangers by a little over a second. The Ranger women turned in a strong performance in their opening meet, winning four individual events and the 200 medley relay.
The Rangers opened the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay, coming in with a time of 2:00.91. The relay was comprised of
Tori Braun (Pittstown, N.J./North Hunterdon),
Alexa Morrissey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Academy),
Karina Urquhart (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) and
Jess Harrington (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield).
Schwinger won a pair of individual races, taking first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:41.31 and cruised to a victory in the 1000 with a time of 11:45.18. In one of the closest races of the afternoon, Morrissey was able to touch the wall .02 seconds before her King's counterpart in the 50 free. She came in with a time of 26.57.
Harrington rounded of the Drew women first place finishers, winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.44.
Competing in his first collegiate meet, freshman
Logan Amodio (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. He turned in an impressive time of 56.73 in the 100 fly and time of 2:08.93 in the 200 individual medley.
The men's 200 medley relay took home first with a time of 1:49.53. Amodio swam the third leg of the relay and was joined by A
ustin Goetjen (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms School),
Thomas DiGuglielmo (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) and
Peter Mari (Washington Twp., N.J./Westwood Regional).
The Rangers will swim in their home opener on Saturday when they host Mount Saint Mary's at F.M. Kirby Pool. The first race is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
